OBITUARIES

QUINN, Richard James

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our father Richard James Quinn on July 16, 2022, at the Stratford General Hospital. Rick was born June 21, 1946 in Toronto, Ontario, and was a longtime resident of Stratford. He is survived by his children Matthew Quinn (Trish) and Melissa Quinn, Rhonda Kearney (Dave) and Kate Pickering (James), grandchildren Ryan, Ellie, Kyle, and Sam as well as extended Quinn and Gettler family including Larry Gettler (Ann), Judy Robinson (Bob), Cathy Gettlerjones (Don); and many nieces and nephews. Rick was predeceased by his wife of 38 years Lynda Jean Quinn (Gettler), his parents Edward and Letty Quinn (Smart); in-laws R. Lloyd and Esther Gettler; siblings, Monsignor Alban Quinn (Edward), John Quinn (Dorothy), Mary Quinn, Olive Graham (Adrian), Peter Quinn (Mavis), Frank Quinn (Rita), Theresa Nachuk (Ben), Patricia Melnik (Melvin), Elizabeth Quinn, and Patrick Quinn. Rick started his career as a Metropolitan Toronto Police Officer, before moving to Stratford as an owner of the Dominion House Tavern in December 1975. He kept the good times rolling until July 2004, going on to sell real estate locally until his retirement. Rick could build anything - taking on renovations to his home, his business' and the cottage over the years with his son, father-in-law, partners, and friends. He was always quick with a joke, didn't beat around the bush, and was a hell of a boss with a loyal staff that included longtime friends and “little sisters” Karen and Brenda. Rick and Lynda were known for their rockin' jukebox parties at the family cottage in Port Albert, where many friends were made over their 33+ years. Special thanks to all of those that stopped in for a coffee, kept those email jokes coming, and reached out - especially over the past few years, it meant a lot. COPD may have slowed him down - but his stubbornness kept him going well past his “expiry date”. By his wishes not to make a big fuss, there will be no funeral or formal visitation but his family will hold a Celebration of Life on September 10 at the Army Navy & Airforce Veterans Club, 151 Lorne Ave. E., Stratford from 1-5 p.m. Rick will join his late wife Lynda in the “condo at the marble orchard” during a private family interment at Avondale Cemetery, Stratford. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Lung Association or the charity of your choice through W.G Young Funeral Home (519) 271-7411 www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com

YOUNG, Pearl

Pearl passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 30, 2022, at the age of 89. Born in Stratford, Ontario, on October 11, 1932, Pearl married George Bear on October 17, 1954, and moved to Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where she and George had four children. Following George's untimely passing in May of 1964, Pearl remarried to W. Joseph Young on November 13, 1966. The new family relocated back to Port Colborne, Ontario, where Pearl and Joe ran Young Bros. Garage before opening Clean in Comfort Carwash and Computers by Young Bros. Over the years, Pearl and Joe were grateful to welcome ten grandchildren and more recently, seventeen greatgrandchildren. Pearl was a devoted wife and a beloved mother and grandmother. Many of her children and grandchildren inherited her affection for animals and her love of reading, and her playful sense of humour will be dearly missed. Pearl also modelled an extraordinary if quiet resilience in the face of great personal tragedy following the loss of George and later her daughter Carolyn in April of 1999. Pearl is survived by her loving husband, her children Jeanne (Michael) Bankert, Brian (Linda) Young, and Alice Young, her son-in-law Udo Schafer, her grandchildren Erich (Melissa) Schafer, Rory (Sara) Schafer, Devan Schafer, Nathan (Bryanne) Schafer, Samantha (John Sedig), Philip Bankert, Emily (Matthew) Near, Katie (Josh) Looyestein, Rachel (Mackenzie) Gifford, Greg (Jenna) Young and her great-grandchildren. Pearl is also survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law Fern Roth, Mildred Roth, Robert Young, David and Ferne Young, Sam and Bernice Young, Esther Flory, Dan and Lois Young, Robert Bear, Phoebe Bear, and Julie and Harold Roth. Pearl is predeceased by her parents, John and Hettie (Gingerich) Roth, her first husband, George Bear, her daughter Carolyn Schafer, and her siblings, Francis Roth, Earl Roth, Mary (Walter) Jantzi, Shirley Young, and Marjorie (Paul) Fehrman. The family would like to thank the staff at Stratford Perth Rotary Hospice for the excellent care Pearl received there in her final days. The Young family will receive visitors at the Davidson Funeral Home, 135 Clarence St., Port Colborne on Saturday, September 3, 2022 from 6-8 p.m. and Sunday, September 4, 2022 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 10:30 a.m .in the Davidson Chapel. Burial will follow at the Reformed Mennonite Cemetery in Stevensville. In lieu of flowers, donations to Toronto Sick Kids Hospital or the Rotary Hospice Stratford Perth would be appreciated.
